✅ Responsible AI in aged care: download your free template

Good morning future-focused leaders.

A new report out this week shows that public-facing roles—like care workers—are among the least likely to be replaced by AI. That’s reassuring news for our frontline teams. But in contrast, HR platforms Indeed and Glassdoor are cutting 1,300 jobs as they lean further into AI across their operations.

So what should we take from this? In aged care, empathy, presence, and human interaction remain our sector’s backbone. But for those of us working behind the scenes, staying across new AI tools isn’t just strategic—it’s essential to keeping our roles efficient and future-ready.

What else we cover this week:

  • NotebookLM brings AI-powered mindmaps and summaries to aged care

  • National session launches practical AI guidelines for providers

  • Most older adults remain sceptical about AI in care settings

  • Global AI-driven remote care market surges toward $24B

  • Chinese nursing homes turn to robots for daily support

  • Korea redefines national strength through AgeTech

  • AgedCareAI tested for use in admin, risk, documentation and more

  • And more...

📚 NotebookLM and the rise of interactive knowledge systems.

A screenshot of an interactive mind map of the Strengthened Aged Care Standards created with NotebookLM.

In brief: NotebookLM is a Google tool that uses AI to help users explore and organise large volumes of information from uploaded sources. Its features offer new ways to access and apply information. For the aged care sector, this opens new opportunities to build interactive knowledge hubs for staff, providers, and clients.

The details:

  • NotebookLM allows users to upload documents such as PDFs, Google Docs, web links, and slides. Users can ask natural-language questions and receive responses with citations drawn directly from the uploaded sources.

  • The system includes tools such as: Mind Maps (visual diagrams that show relationships between key ideas), Audio Overviews (AI-generated spoken summaries of key topics)

  • Uers can make notebooks accessible to others for collaborative or reference purposes.

  • Earlier this year, as covered in a previous newsletter, I put it to the test by creating a podcast overview of the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards that showed how fast and effective this can be.

  • Google has now published many more featured notebooks on high-quality topics like long-term trends in human wellbeing, which you can use as an example as to what you can achieve using this tool.

Why it matters: Staff and managers often need to engage with complex materials, such as government standards, procedural documents, or policies and guidelines. NotebookLM offers a structured way to surface and interact with relevant information without requiring deep technical skills.

By building internal notebooks based on organisational policies, legislative updates, or sector reports, providers could:

  • Support staff training and orientation

  • Improve access to policy content

  • Reduce duplication of effort across teams

  • Maintain consistency in how documents are interpreted and used

This approach does not replace formal education or compliance processes but may assist with day-to-day information retrieval and staff support.

🛠️ From Policy to Practice: AI Guidelines in Aged Care

In brief: Over 100 aged care professionals from across Australia joined the national session on responsible AI adoption—marking a significant step toward safer, more ethical use of AI in the sector. These resources are now freely available to support your organisation’s own responsible AI journey.

The details:

  • Aged care providers are increasingly embedding GenAI tools into their daily operations.

  • A recent global survey by KPMG and the University of Melbourne revealed a growing concern: nearly 50% of respondents admitted inappropriate use, and 66% relied on AI outputs without review.

  • This session introduced a structured approach to implementing AI, tailored for aged care environments.

  • The framework builds on the Multicultural Communities Council of SAs AI Guidelines—one of Australia’s first not-for-profit initiatives in this space, active since December 2024.

  • Visit the AI Adoption Workgroup website to access the two practical resources for free: a customisable AI Guidelines Template and an Implementation Guide to support rollout.

Thanks to the AI Adoption in Aged Care Workgroup and all attendees for progressing this essential national conversation. Capability-building starts here.

QUICK HITS

👵🏼 Only 42% of residents are comfortable with AI in aged care. A recent US study from Washington State University surveyed adults across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, exploring views on artificial intelligence in senior care. While some see AI as a way to improve efficiency, nearly half find its use concerning—just 12% believe it improves health outcomes, and many suspect it's more about boosting profits. Importantly, 86% of respondents want providers to clearly disclose when AI is being used in their care.

📈 AI-driven remote care is booming—with 26.6% annual growth expected. New projections show the global market for AI in remote patient monitoring (RPM) is set to grow tenfold, from USD 2.3 billion in 2023 to USD 24 billion by 2033. These systems use AI to analyse data from wearables and home sensors, helping clinicians monitor patients with chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Growth is fuelled by rising demand for virtual care, ageing populations, and support from governments and insurers.

🍲 Robots in Chinese nursing homes are changing daily care. A new video from China showcases how robotics is being integrated into aged care—from meal preparation to rehabilitation. These robots help staff manage workloads and offer residents more timely support. While not a replacement for human care, the technology is being embraced as a way to ease pressure in China’s rapidly ageing society.

🤖 Korea bets on AI and robotics over population growth. A recent column in the Korean Maeil Business Newspaper argues that national strength will no longer be defined by population size, but by AI capabilities. With South Korea projected to become the world's oldest society by 2045, officials are shifting focus from traditional birthrate policies to AgeTech solutions. Humanoid robots in China and the US—like Tesla’s Optimus—show how AI is rapidly learning human tasks, from cooking to healthcare. Korea’s new presidential AI advisor has been tasked with exploring how AI can address ageing, climate, and demographic challenges.

📌 Smarter care with AI: A closer look at AgedCareAI in action

I’ve recently been invited to join the advisory board for AgedCareAI, alongside residential aged care providers from South Australia. It’s a privilege to contribute to shaping a tool that’s designed with the day-to-day realities of aged care in mind. I was also invited to test their app, and I’ve seen firsthand that it performs well. I can see how it can add value in settings where time and clarity are critical.

Developed by Innovation Philosophy in Sydney, AgedCareAI is a suite of tools that supports aged care teams in their daily work. It combines real-time resident data, a plain-English search function for policies and procedures, voice-delivered prompts through earpieces, and guided templates to assist with documentation and compliance. All data remains stored with the organisation and is not published or shared online.

What I value about AgedCareAI is that it doesn’t claim to transform everything at once. Instead, it targets specific, high-impact areas: early risk detection, reducing administrative workload, and improving visibility across care processes. I’ll continue to share updates as the advisory board’s work progresses.

I'm not here to hype AI. I'm here to help you understand it, use it, and learn as it evolves. Whether you're testing a new tool, using it to lighten your workload, or keeping pace with the changes, I hope you found something here worth your time.

Feel free to forward this to your network or share it with your team.

See you next Tuesday,
George
